Last November, 63% of Maine voters went to the polls and said yes to Extreme Risk Protection Orders.
This was only possible because people like you, Jason. You showed up. You made phone calls. You talked to your neighbors. You made it clear that commonsense gun safety is a priority for a supermajority of Mainers.
And that was just one victory. We passed a 72-hour waiting period. We amended child endangerment statutes to prevent children from unauthorized access to loaded firearms. We passed requirements for serial numbers on all ghost guns, including 3D printed firearms, so law enforcement could more easily prevent crime.
These aren't just policy wins. These are lives saved.
These are children who come home from school safe. These are families who don't have to face the kind of tragedy that has become too common.
But our work isn't finished.
Our legislative priorities remain urgent:
- passing a safe storage law that protects teenagers, the most vulnerable population
- requiring background checks for all firearm purchases, and
- giving municipalities the ability to regulate firearms in their official proceedings.
And we must stop the gun lobby, as well-funded and organized as it is, from rolling back the progress we've made. They've announced plans to challenge our Extreme Risk Protection Order law in court. They're asking legislators in Augusta to weaken the protections we fought so hard to pass.
They're betting that we'll get tired, that we'll stop showing up, that we'll let them roll back the progress we've made together.
They're wrong about that too.
Will you donate to the Maine Gun Safety Coalition today and help us continue this fight?
Your support allows us to organize, to educate, to show up when it matters. It funds our community programs. It trains volunteers. It gives us the resources to stand up to well-funded opposition and protect the victories we've won together.
The fight to save lives is ongoing, and so is our determination to build a safer Maine.
Thank you for everything you've done. Thank you for what you'll do next.
With resolve,
Nacole Palmer, Executive Director
Maine Gun Safety Coalition
