Yesterday, Florida Decides Healthcare issued a press release detailing how a flawed interpretation of the rules surrounding petition verification is currently affecting our petition circulation efforts. Here's what you need to know:
The Florida Division of Elections has interpreted a rule in the Florida Administrative Code in a way that excludes every Floridian who signed a verified petition for Medicaid expansion during past election cycles from participating in our current signature process.
This rule has never been applied the way the Division is now enforcing it. Past initiatives have always been able to gather new signatures from voters after previous petitions expired. The new interpretation is not only improper but also illogical, blocking Floridians from renewing their support for the initiative when previous signatures have expired. This is a direct violation of the constitutional rights of more than 80,000 Floridians.
We are working with our attorneys to resolve this situation and are confident the state will make the right decision to protect Floridians' constitutional rights. In the meantime, we are continuing to collect petitions, and will continue to do so regardless of the outcome. The people of Florida are passionate about expanding Medicaid to cover over a million workers, veterans, and seniors without care and we will not slow down our efforts to bring them the care they deserve.
