The world saw last night exactly what's at stake in this election.
J.D. Vance refused to answer a yes-or-no question on whether Donald Trump lost the 2020 election. He knows the answer, of course. But he also knows that Trump was watching.
If the Trump-Vance ticket wins, we now know that J.D. Vance will do what Mike Pence refused to do. He will do Trump's bidding, even if it means destroying American democracy. Look, I wish this election was shaping up to be the landside it should be. But it's not. This election is tied — and that is way too close for comfort.
So here's what I'm going to spend the next 34 days focused on:
- There are 4.5 million pro-democracy voters in battleground states who might typically vote Republican but are deeply worried about the threat Trump poses to our democracy.
- These voters are less likely to be persuaded by partisan voices or TV ads. They respond best to people who've spent their careers in service. We've spent the last year assembling a roster of patriots to do that outreach.
- When we reach these voters with the right messengers, we will win.
