Jason,
Congressional Republicans have been blaming Joe Biden for a so-called border crisis since his first day in office, ever eager to fly down for a photo op or get in a helicopter to "survey" the situation. It also happens to be Donald Trump's favorite rallying cry.
Recently, they started blocking emergency aid funding — demanding that nothing gets passed without addressing the border. Guess what: Congressional leaders actually came together to put together a bipartisan immigration bill.
That's when things got weird. House Republicans suddenly flipped against the deal, after pressure from (you guessed it) Donald Trump, who desperately didn't want them to hurt his stump speech.
For those keeping score at home, the Republican Party is arguing two incredible things at once: (A) the border crisis is an "invasion" that's destroying our country; and (B) we can't do anything to address it until after the election. (Needless to say, that's not typically how "invasions" work.)
Now, House Republicans are now trying to pass limited emergency aid to Israel, while abandoning allies in Ukraine. THIS is the Trump doctrine: Give Putin everything he wants and hope voters are stupid enough to believe his nonsensical stance on the border.
According to recent polls, that cynical, anti-democratic strategy has a viable chance of succeeding. But here's the thing: The majority of Americans see through such obvious BS — and there's a strong contingent of swing voters who have started turning on Donald Trump. If those folks vote, we win.
Our job before November is to reach those pro-democracy voters in key states and ensure they vote like our country's future depends on it, because it does. Will you chip in today to support that mission?
We all know that anything can happen in an election year. At this point in 2020, the pandemic hadn't even hit. The best thing we can do to keep momentum in our favor is to do the work of finding and reaching the voters we need to win.
Thank you for being part of that work. It means so much.
Amy
