None of this is popular. (And a lot of it is illegal.)

It's been a frantic, ugly first few days for Trump, Jason. Among the lowlights:

  • Pardoning nearly every January 6th insurrectionist — including those who violently assaulted police officers and some considered to be domestic terrorists. Those guys are all back on the streets.

  • Deploying thousands of troops to the Southern border.

  • Reversing a Civil Rights Era executive order that desegregated federal contractors — and trying to snuff out any effort to make the government a more equitable employer.

  • Threatening to conduct deportations in major American cities — and removing protections that prevented raids in schools and churches.

  • Questioning staffers of the National Security Council on their loyalty to Trump and sidelining 160 national security officers.

  • Trying to redefine who gets to be an American citizen, in a blatant violation of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.

A lot of this was called for by Project 2025 — you know, the blueprint Trump told voters he had nothing to do with. (Shout out to the media outlets who let him get away with those blatant lies.)

All of this is cruel, all of it is wrong, and a lot of it is illegal (if not straight-up unconstitutional). But they're going to try it anyway — just to see what they can get away with. If it feels like too much to grapple with, that's the idea. It's designed to feel overwhelming. They want us to throw our hands up and say "What's the point in fighting back?"

Don't give them that.

Here's what I know: Most of what he's doing is deeply unpopular. He didn't win a majority of voters in November, and those who did were thinking about the price of eggs. (That hit record highs this week, by the way; Trump has done nothing to address it.)

Trump ran this playbook in his first term: do a lot of awful stuff right out of the gate. And we learned that when we push back, when we challenge the things that are cruel, wrong, illegal, and unconstitutional, we don't just slow them down. We can actually stop them. And we can win back power.

Let's do what we can to throw sand in the gears of the Trump agenda, while laying the groundwork to win back the House and put a check on this administration as soon as humanly possible.

If you're with me, please chip in to fund this work. Or simply reply to this email with a "Hell yeah, I'm in!"

The period of mourning is over. It's time to fight back.

Amy
