The truth about him is disqualifying

Jason,

The Senate held a confirmation hearing for Pete Hegseth yesterday, and one thing is crystal clear: The man who wants to lead the U.S. military is refusing to be honest with the American people.

Regarding allegations of sexual assault and alcohol abuse, he wanted to have it both ways — admitting he's not a "perfect person" and that he'd experienced a personal transformation, but then blaming his issues on "anonymous smears" (even though several of the allegations weren't anonymous at all).

Hegseth also flip-flopped on his outrageous (and very public) position that the United States shouldn't allow women to serve in combat roles, claiming it was an old statement and that he's being taken out of context. (It wasn't, and he's not.) Senator Warren called out the fact that he's changing his position because it's bad politics, saying, "I've heard of deathbed conversions, but this is the first time I've heard of a nomination conversion!"

We all know why he's lying about this stuff. The truth about him is disqualifying.

Let's just take the alcohol abuse issue. Hegseth's coworkers reported that he once had multiple drinks before a morning meeting. Another attested to his getting drunk at a work event and chanting "Kill all Muslims!" in public. For a public figure, that's erratic behavior at best.

Now, get this: Hegseth has told senators he will stop drinking, but only if he gets confirmed! That's right — he acknowledges that his drinking would impair his ability to do the job but gives us no reason to believe he's actually taking the matter seriously.

Look, this isn't the kind of job where you can cross your fingers and hope for the best. The Defense Secretary runs the largest agency in our government, overseeing close to 3 million personnel and nearly a $1 trillion budget. This person is in the chain of command for nuclear weapons employment! One slip-up could be devastating to our national security.

We know the Trump team is putting the screws to a few senators who have publicly expressed doubts about Hegseth — and one moderate senator told a reporter off the record that this nomination would surely fail "if it were a secret ballot." (Think about that for a second. If U.S. senators felt free to call it as they see it, this guy would never be Defense Secretary.)

The next few weeks will be critical to making sure the American people and their senators know that this is easily the most unqualified, dangerous Defense Secretary nominee in our nation's history.

We'll be out there making this case as loudly and as often as we can — will you support these efforts with a donation today?

This one means a whole lot to me, for obvious reasons. Thank you for fighting this nomination alongside me.

Amy
