They will regret this

 Jason,

The Senate confirmed Pete Hegseth yesterday to be the next Secretary of Defense — what an absolute travesty.

Our campaign to defeat the nomination won over three Republicans — Sens. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Mitch McConnell. (Yes, even Mitch.) They had to trot out Vice President Vance to cast a vote to break the tie. I have it on good information that if the confirmation vote was a secret ballot, Hegseth doesn't get close.

But the vast majority of Republicans in the Senate have shown us they're more scared of disobeying Trump than they are about having a qualified person leading our military, defense and nuclear weapon establishment.

My prediction is those senators will regret that display of cowardice. Someday soon, if they don't already.

Today, though, I fear what this confirmation means for the people I've served with who now fall under the command of a man who seems to have no moral compass — someone who's been repeatedly awful to women and awful to work with. I especially feel for all the women in combat roles who will wake up every morning knowing their boss doesn't think they should even exist.

Most of all, I worry that a line has been crossed. I fear deeply that Hegseth will turn our military into a partisan political machine, focused on fighting culture wars that don't make Americans safe and willing to turn our weapons of war on our own cities and citizens.

All of it makes me sick to my stomach.

If there's a consolation here, it's that we exposed chinks in the MAGA armor. The Trump machine had to muster its full strength to save Hegseth, and they won't be able to do that for other, horribly unqualified candidates. Political capital isn't a renewable resource, and they've now spent some on a cabinet secretary that I guarantee will come back to haunt them.

But I won't lie. Today is a real gut punch for me on a personal level.

Thank you for reminding me I'm not alone in my frustration. It's because of you I know I can get back up, dust myself off, and fight like hell again tomorrow.

In solidarity,

Amy
