This is a constitutional crisis

Jason,

With all the chaos, it helps to state facts.

The world's richest man has forcibly taken over entire governmental agencies and systems. He's illegally trying to shut down programs he doesn't like, including USAID — which on top of saving lives around the world, also helps prevent global health crises and keeps Americans safe.

He has told allies he hopes to end all federal regulations, including those that give his companies headaches because of petty things like public safety. His cronies, who likely lack security clearances, have reportedly gained access to the American people's private data.

No one elected Elon Musk. That last fact is worth repeating.

His actions are lawless, out of control, and designed to break the parts of government he doesn't like in order to stockpile wealth and power. His companies receive billions in funding from other nations, including America's adversaries — casting all of these actions in a shadowy, if not outright nefarious, light.

We're living through the kind of thing that most Americans don't want to believe is possible here. What's more, it's unclear if the person ostensibly in charge is even aware of the extent of Musk's power grab.

This is a constitutional crisis, perhaps the most profound of our lives.

What the Musk-Trump outfit is doing is designed to pressure-test our system of checks and balances — the way we avoid falling into monarchy and authoritarianism. We teach our grade school kids about it, because it's essential to our form of self-government. Now, it's under attack.

It's terrifying to witness all of this and not know if Congress will resist efforts to seize its authority. The courts have already temporarily blocked some of it, but it's deeply worrying to consider how a Trump-aligned Supreme Court might rule about the limits on his power.

I don't know how this story ends. But I do know that we can't wait for someone to come save the day. Every one of us who is outraged right now should say so.

Call your representative and senators — (202) 224-3121 — and tell them to do everything in their power to stop Musk and the unelected goon squad from breaking the federal government. And keep going. It might seem small, but post about it. Say it loudly: Who does Elon Musk think he is?

This is America. And our country needs the people who love it to fight back against those who are arrogant enough to try to steal it.

More soon,

Amy
