Originally created during World War II to counter Nazi propaganda, VOA later became a critical tool in pushing back against disinformation spread by regimes in Russia, China, and Iran. But now, Trump has shut it down. He signed an order dismantling the agency that oversees VOA, calling it "radical propaganda" and "anti-Trump." 1,300 journalists and staff have been let go — locked out of their emails and unable to enter their offices. Radio and TV broadcasts worldwide have gone dark, leaving audiences in dangerous situations without access to critical, fact-based news. State-run media from authoritarian regimes will eagerly fill the gap, unchecked by the counterbalance of VOA's reporting. This is more than an attack on press freedom — it's a total overhaul of the American approach to foreign policy. Voice of America was a critical tool of soft power — spreading truth, democracy, and goodwill toward the United States in places where people desperately needed hope.
