Playing dress-up as a strongman dictator

Jason,

This weekend, for his 79th birthday, Donald Trump is playing dress-up as a strongman dictator.

Our country will spend upwards of $45 million to put on a military parade in his honor — a move that would make Kim Jong Un blush.

It might seem unrelated, but what Trump is trying to do in Los Angeles this week is part of the same show. First, he sent in the National Guard in defiance of the governor — the first time the Guard has been deployed without the consent of a state's governor in 60 years. The next day, he decided to send in 700 Marines, who are explicitly barred from law enforcement activities under federal law.

All of this to put down a civilian protest that, by all accounts, was almost entirely peaceful. He wants to pick a fight. He wants to drum up a violent response. He wants bloodshed among his own citizens. In fact, the administration has started to refer to these peaceful protestors as "insurrectionists" — telegraphing that he wants to invoke a law from 1807 that would allow him to mobilize the U.S. military against our own people.

It's evil. It's unAmerican. That's how desperate Donald Trump is for people to think he's tough.

But here's the thing. As he's saluting tanks in D.C. this weekend, remember this: Donald Trump is and always has been a phony. His "self-made man" back story? Pure fiction. His "reality" TV show? Comically fake. His casinos? Utter failures. His "university"? A literal fraud operation. This is a man who still swears he won an election he so obviously lost.

When he mugs for TV cameras and boasts about deploying American service members into American cities, he's proving that he's a fragile manchild who, unfortunately for the sane people of this country, is currently the most powerful person on the planet. And he's more than willing to hurt people to prove it.

But remember this, too: America doesn't do kings. We're quite famous, in fact, for rejecting them. That wake-up call is coming for Trump sooner than later.

If you want to help, find and attend a "No Kings Day" event near you this weekend and help rain on his birthday strongman parade.

Even if you can't make it out, you can still help build a grassroots organization on a mission to dismantle Trumpism in America — make a donation today.

So much of this news is deeply troubling and disheartening for those of us who believe in America and our Constitution. But we're lost if we let it shake our resolve to fight back.

Thank you,

Amy
