Did Republicans just sacrifice their majority?

Jason,

Republicans barely squeaked this god-awful budget through Congress today. Once Trump signs it, I believe they'll be sealing their fate for the midterms.

This behemoth bill won't just add trillions to the deficit. It's going to rip health care away from upwards of 17 million Americans, jack up the cost of insurance for millions more, and take food assistance from another 3 million low-income families. And all of that is for what again? That's right — to give $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, nearly all to the wealthiest among us.

This legislation is extremely unpopular today when most people don't even know what it's in it — just wait for people to start to feel its effects. This is a disaster, and the entire Republican Party will own it.

But it's up to us to prosecute that case and take their keys away in the next election. If you can help, we need it — make a grassroots donation today and let's take our country back.

Republicans know full well they just passed an electoral albatross. Behind the scenes, they're starting to pull every string imaginable to give themselves an artificial advantage in the midterms.

  • In Texas, at the White House's urging, state lawmakers will try to redraw its congressional lines — to further gerrymander an already deeply unfair map to try to hand the GOP an extra few seats in the House. Doing this mid-decade is extremely rare and blatantly corrupt.

  • A similar effort is expected to take place in Ohio, where state Republicans have a reputation for defying courts to implement extreme, partisan-skewed maps.

  • Marjorie Taylor Greene is pushing legislation, backed by Trump, that would require a sudden do-over of the census in order to remove non-citizen residents from the population count. The bill would trigger a congressional map redraw across the country before the next election. This is a radical, extremely unconstitutional ploy — and while it has a slim chance of passing, it tells you a lot about how badly Republicans think the midterms are going to go for them if they don't manipulate the outcome.

  • And in a scary development, the Trump DOJ is starting to go after states' voter rolls — trying to disenfranchise legal, eligible citizens. They're plotting legal challenges to throw out ballots in close elections, just like they tried to do in a supreme court race in North Carolina this year. They failed there, but they're not done trying.

These are the actions of a party that knows it can't win fair and square. They're going to try to cheat to hold on to power.

They will fail, as long as our side does its job. And today, as awful and harmful as this budget is, we've been handed a huge political advantage — let's not fumble it.

But if Republicans are already scheming to hold on to power next year, we absolutely can't afford to drag our feet. Chip in if you can right now, and let's make sure Republicans pay at the ballot box for the damage they've done — to America and to its people.

Thank you,

Amy
