Jason,
I know some of you might not be in a cookouts-and-fireworks mood this Fourth of July. Trust me, I get it.
But let me give you four reasons I think you should snap yourself out of that funk:
- Cookouts and fireworks are always awesome.
-
The Donald Trumps, Stephen Millers, and J.D. Vances of the world are actively trying to take away your joy. Please do not let them.
-
In this country, the party in power doesn't get to own the flag. And certainly not a party that supported an insurrection in which that very flag was used as a weapon. The red, white, and blue belong to each and every one of us.
-
Here's the big one: The Fourth of July isn't about celebrating what America is today. It's not about celebrating our political leaders. It's about celebrating the idea of America, the radical notion that power is held by the people — not a monarch, not the nobility, not a religion. That idea is particularly poignant right now.
This is the oldest democracy on Earth, and I'll be damned if I'm going to sit here and let a two-bit, wannabe dictator destroy it. We love this country, and we're going to fight for it with everything we've got.
So hell yeah, I'm celebrating today. I hope you will, too.
Let's take America back,
Amy
