A few weeks ago, investigative journalists at The Lever uncovered a scheme by Trump allies to turn the National Weather Service into a for-profit subscription model.
That means that millions of Americans could be forced to pay in order to receive life-saving forecasts and emergency alerts, even as climate disasters intensify and become more frequent. Turns out, these money-hungry Trump loyalists haven't been subtle about their plans. The Heritage Foundation's "Project 2025" blueprint explicitly calls for the break up of NOAA and commercialization of NWS forecasting operations.
We can't allow private firms to gatekeep access to critical weather data. Imagine — tsunami alerts only available to paid subscribers. Tornado warnings behind a paywall. When floods, hurricanes, wildfires, and heat waves strike, every second counts, and every member of a community should get the same timely and accurate alerts.
Last month's catastrophic flooding in Kerr County, Texas showed exactly what's at stake: in fast-moving disasters, public, trusted, and widely accessible warnings save lives. If privatization of our weather service moves ahead, rural communities, low-income families, and small towns could be left in the dark when disaster comes.
That's exactly why Congress must act now to block any move to privatize our National Weather Service and codify free public access to critical forecasts and warnings.
Will you sign on now to tell your representatives to stop Trump's privatization of the National Weather Service and protect free, public weather information? The National Weather Service is a public good that millions of Americans have relied on for decades. Its lifesaving work shouldn't be sold to the highest bidder.
