Jason, I'm Megan O'Rourke, and I'm excited to announce that I'm running to represent New Jersey's 7th District in Congress. Before I tell you more about myself, will you chip in whatever you can today to help me kickstart this campaign?
I'm a Jersey girl. I was raised in the district, in Blairstown, and my family has been in New Jersey for generations, since my great-grandfather immigrated to this country from Ireland. I know what it's like to worry about money growing up. I remember going to work on weekends with my mom so she could get overtime pay. I remember getting groceries from our church's food pantry. And I remember getting my first job at a bagel shop when I was fifteen. After high school, I wanted to continue my education, but my parents couldn't afford it, so I didn't think I could go. But while I was working as a waitress, I realized I had an opportunity to take control of my life. I found a college I could afford, applied, and got in with a full tuition scholarship. I went on to get my bachelor's, dual master's, and a PhD in sustainable agriculture. Along the way, I got married and had three amazing children—and let me tell you, raising a family while pursuing my education wouldn't have been possible without Medicaid, WIC, Head Start, and Free School lunches. Following my PhD, I had the privilege to become a climate change scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and USAID, and also served as a tenured professor of agricultural science at Virginia Tech. For a long time… I was proud of my career in public service, and I never thought about running for office. But I've witnessed firsthand what Donald Trump and his administration are doing to attack facts and data—putting everything we know at risk—so I saw no choice but to resign my position, stand up, and do what I can to fight back. I'm running for Congress because I've seen what this administration is doing to dismantle progress, our scientific community, and a government that delivers for its people. I know I have the personal and professional experiences to understand life in this district and how to get things done in Congress, but I need you with me from day one. Can I count on your support today?
Thanks for being part of this team. With appreciation, Megan
