That he'll go on to serve his community in Congress, fight for his state as Attorney General of California, suing a man named Donald Trump 122 times in the process, or that he'll be tasked with helping the country defeat the COVID-19 pandemic as HHS Secretary. He certainly never imagined he'd be running for governor of California. But let's back up. Because this story – my story, starts with my parents, Manuel and Maria, who came here from Mexico with $12 and a dream. My parents taught my siblings and me the value of hard work. Growing up, my dad worked in construction and my mom was a clerical worker. We never had much to spare, but back then, that was enough for them to support our family, own a home, send four of us kids to college or the military, and retire comfortably. That's the California Dream I'm fighting for – but today, it's slipping away for far too many families. Like so many families, all my parents wanted was a better future for their kids. Today, that's what my wife, Carolina, and I want for our daughters, Clarisa, Olivia, and Natalia. Because when you become a parent, you realize how much of what you do in your life isn't about you or your generation, it's about the world you're handing off to the next one.
I'm running for governor because, quite frankly, I'm worried about the future we're handing over to our kids.
