Jason, We're officially less than a week away from Election Day, and with it our opportunity to pass Extreme Risk Protection Orders, proven legislation that keeps our communities safer. On Tuesday at your polling place, you will see a ballot with Question 2 that looks like this:
With election day so close, I wanted to offer a brief summary of what ERPOs are and why they're effective at reducing gun violence. Put simply, ERPOs are an effective tool that empowers family members to turn directly to a court when a loved one is in crisis and temporarily limit their access to deadly weapons. ERPOs are a powerful intervention that have saved countless lives in 21 other states. But in states without these laws, the families of would-be mass shooters—who display clear signs of mental distress and dangerousness leading up to a deadly tragedy—have no tools to prevent tragedy. ERPOs give families a vital tool to prevent senseless loss. A state investigation found that Maine's laws are too weak to prevent tragedies like the one that devastated Lewiston in 2023. If ERPOs had been in place, perhaps the shooting could have been prevented, and 18 Mainers would still be with their families. November 4 is our chance to make our communities safer by voting Yes on 2 and to bring the protection of a true extreme risk protection order ERPO to our state. My team and I are working tirelessly to make sure we succeed, but we're counting on your support to drive us forward. Will you contribute to our cause today?
With gratitude, Nacole Palmer Executive Director Maine Gun Safety Coalition
