New leader, same old priorities

Dear Jason, Alaska just got a new House Minority Leader — and unfortunately, it tells us everything we need to know about the current Republican leadership. Representative DeLena Johnson has taken the helm. And if her record is any indication, Alaska's students, teachers, and public schools aren't exactly at the top of her priority list. Help us stand up to failed GOP leadership and keep investing in Alaska's classrooms — donate now. Here are the facts: HB 57 — the bill that finally delivered a long-overdue increase in per-student funding — passed only because our Democratic and Non-partisan legislators fought hard and overrode two vetoes to get it done.  Rep. Johnson voted against it. HB 28 — the student loan relief bill for full-time public school teachers and one of the most straightforward teacher retention tools we've had in years. Alaska's teacher shortage is the worst it's ever been, and this bill, if passed, will help make it more affordable for teachers to stay. Rep Johnson voted against it. These aren't complicated issues. These are bills that support the people who make our schools function and give our kids a fighting chance — teachers, parents, and students who have been hanging on by a thread. And this is the leadership Alaska Republicans have chosen.
