Hi Jason,
This morning, I stood at Monticello — the home of Thomas Jefferson, the Virginian who wrote the Declaration of Independence — and watched new Americans take their oath of citizenship.
I cannot think of a more fitting place to witness that moment. Two hundred and fifty years ago, Jefferson put to paper the words that would define a nation: that all men are created equal, endowed with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
This evening, I'll be in Colonial Williamsburg to celebrate our nation's 250th birthday alongside Virginians from across the Commonwealth. Our “America: Made in Virginia” festivities will be broadcast nationally — because this anniversary belongs to everyone, and Virginia's role in it is one worth sharing with the whole country.
America was made in Virginia. That is the theme of our 250th celebration, and I believe it deeply. This is where our founding documents were written, where the ideals of American democracy took shape, and where we continue — imperfectly and persistently — to live up to what our founders put to paper.
I hope you have a wonderful Fourth of July with the people you love.
Happy 250th,
Governor Abigail Spanberger |
