Jason,
It's been a long day. But before I shut it down for the night, I want to take a minute to explain why I decided to start The American SOS Project.
It's no secret that if it weren't for Donald Trump getting elected, I might never have decided to get into politics. His open mockery of the Constitution I swore an oath to defend got me off the sidelines.
People sometimes ask me if I regret that decision. (I don't.) Yes, it's true that the 2020 election was tough for me and my family — Mitch McConnell spent millions dragging my name through the mud. And even though I didn't win my race, it was glorious to see voters across the country reject Donald Trump, making him a one-term president and helping flip Congress.
That's why right now, I feel like I'm watching a horror movie unfold in slow motion. Voters in 27 states this fall will elect their secretary of state — and as you read this, Donald Trump is actively trying to install his cronies in those critical positions. He knows that if people who have embraced his Big Lie are overseeing the presidential election in 2024, he's a shoo-in. That's not some conspiracy theory. That's the part they're already saying out loud.
Look, I know people are still exhausted from the last five years. Mustering the strength to put our backs into a new mission feels pretty tough. Trust me, I get it.
But the truth is there's no cavalry coming to save our democracy. We know that Donald Trump tried and failed to steal the 2020 election. We know he's going to try again — if he gets the chance.
We have a plan to take on and defeat Trump's hand-picked secretary of state candidates in battlegrounds across the country, and we have six months to pull it off. I'm relying on anyone who believes in this mission to help build it — will you make a donation to launch The American SOS Project today?
Before I call it, I want to say something about a few other important projects I've been working on since 2020: Honor Bound and Democratic Majority Action are causes near and dear to my heart, and that work will continue behind the scenes. Thank you to everyone who've helped support those projects.
But I don't want any confusion about where my priorities are in these next six months. The American SOS Project is a mission I plan on winning, and I'm all in. I hope you'll decide to join me.
Thank you, for everything.
Amy
