Jason,
13 years ago today, the Supreme Court issued a 5-4 ruling in Citizens United v. FEC stipulating that corporate money in our elections constituted free speech under the First Amendment.
In the time since, corporations, billionaires, and other dark money special interests have poured tens of billions of dollars into Super PACs that pollute the airwaves with false and defamatory attacks. In the 2022 elections alone, spending exceeded $16.7 billion.
What is the result of all this ridiculous spending? The voice of the average citizen is greatly diminished, and our democracy suffers.
We need a change to reinvigorate our democracy and civic engagement with our elections. As dark money spending on our elections has increased in the years since Citizens United, so too have the threats to our democracy.
So we're asking:
Today, on the 13th anniversary of Citizens United v. FEC, add your name to our petition calling for a Constitutional Amendment to overturn Citizens United and say that free speech isn't measured by a checking account, it's the equal right of every American.
Thanks for speaking up on this important issue.
