Jason,
Yes, Donald Trump is currently on trial for criminal hush money payments to deceive voters during the 2016 election.
Yes, the New York Times reported he appeared to fall asleep just a few hours into the proceedings.
Yes, it's wonderful to see the basic principle that no one is above the law on full display in America.
No, I'm not banking on the outcome saving us from four more years of Trump in the White House.
It's just not that easy. For one, even if the trial is resolved quickly and even if he's convicted, it won't change the fact that he's still going to be the presidential nominee of the Republican Party. And party leaders will do what they always do when confronted with Trump's abhorrent behavior: look the other way and accuse anyone who has the nerve to hold him accountable of waging a partisan witch hunt.
No matter what, the Republican establishment will continue to support Trump's campaign and do everything they can to put him back in power.
That's why I'm so focused on building an operation that can turn the tide in this election regardless of what happens in that Manhattan courtroom. We know who we need to reach: pro-democracy voters in battleground states — folks who are more inclined to vote against Trump the more they see him flout the law, lie about election results, or buddy up to Putin.
I hope the coverage of Trump's criminal trial and all the evidence that he broke the law to cheat and win an election is massive. But I'm not counting on it to reach those pro-democracy voters without a whole lot of help from people like us.
Today, I'm asking you to join me in refusing to sit back and just hope for the best. Let's build the operation we need to defeat Trump for good. If you can, make a donation today to ensure we reach as many pro-democracy voters in as many battleground states as we can.
No falling asleep, not now. More soon — thank you,
Amy
