Term limits would keep the judges of the highest court of the land accountable, which we badly need after the blatant ethics violations committed by many have been exposed. With term limits, accountability, and transparency, America can rebuild a relationship of trust with its people. With more and more recent ethics violations having been committed by Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, trust in our judicial system is at an all time low. Additionally, the current Supreme Court is largely conservative — one third of our sitting Justices were appointed by Trump to positions on the highest court in the country. Earlier this year, a bipartisan coalition of judges, legal scholars, and researchers have suggested a limit of 18 years of service for Supreme Court justices. Transitioning away from the lifetime appointment system that allows justices to serve for decades would ensure that the Court better reflects the current state of American values and society. This change could also reduce the politicization and partisanship of the Court by making the appointment process more predictable and less influenced by the timing of vacancies. A new proposal would put vital checks on the Supreme Court, if enacted. The Supreme Court Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization (TERM) Act proposes fixed 18-year terms for Supreme Court Justices, with new nominations occurring in the first and third years of each presidential term. This is not just a reform; it's a lifeline for our judicial system, ensuring fair and accountable governance. Our Supreme Court must be ever-evolving and ever-changing, keeping up with the growth and diversity of our nation.
