The federal government has created a free online tax filing system for millions of taxpayers to use, and it's available nationwide this year. It's called Direct File and will make filing taxes easier and more accessible for everyone. However, as of now, Direct File will only allow you to file your federal tax returns, unless your state opts-in to the new system. Today, we're calling on our state governors to opt-in — as soon as possible. Big name tax prep companies like TurboTax and H&R Block have spent over $45 million in the last 20 years lobbying the federal government in hopes of stopping the creation of a free Direct File system — they're working hard to hide Direct File from search results and lobby state governments not to opt-in, so we've got to fight back. Citizens of Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming were able to use Direct File this past tax filing season. It's time to expand Direct File and encourage the governors of all 50 states to opt-in.
