Jason -
I'll be honest: I'm still heartbroken over last week's results. And now I'm pretty angry, too.
Trump just picked a Fox News host to be his Defense Secretary. This is an absurd, offensive, and downright dangerous choice — a nomination that should be laughed out of the Senate. If confirmed, Pete Hegseth would be the least qualified person to hold this position in modern history. As one national security insider put it: "Who the f*** is this guy?"
What we do know about him is the reason I was inspired to write to you today. Last week, he said in an interview: "I'm straight-up just saying we should not have women in combat roles."
Look, I admire Hegseth's service to our country, but saying something like that tells me he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. I'd love to see Pete look some of my friends in the eye and tell them their service makes our military less effective (or my service for that matter). But he won't, because it's all fake. Pete Hegseth pretends to be an "alpha male" big thinker on TV. That's why he's denigrating women servicemembers — to look tough (just what Trump likes, fake toughness).
The last time I checked, the Defense Department isn't the land of make-believe. But I'm sure this nomination is step one of Trump's plan to take the "woke" out of the military, or whatever unserious talk-radio fodder he's passing off as a plan.
So what do we do about it? As always, I've got to be honest: I don't know yet.
What I can tell you is that hiding from the news isn't a viable option. The team and I are working through how best we can effectively throw a wrench in Trump's agenda while building up for critical elections that ultimately take away his power.
If you want to invest in that work, you can do so here. While I don't know exactly what shape our mission will take in the months ahead, I believe in this grassroots team with my heart and soul. And you can trust that any investment you make will, as always, be put to use in the most effective way we know how.
As disheartening as the last week has been, it's also served as a reminder that the future isn't written yet. I refuse to forfeit it.
More soon, I promise.
Thank you,
Amy
