| Jason, I had to say something. Now that Pete Hegseth is Defense Secretary, we must push back hard against his attempts to question the integration of women in the military. He's been leading this charge for years now, and it's an argument entirely predicated on the false notion that the presence of women in the military somehow makes us weaker — that we "lowered our standards" in order to allow women to serve. It's total garbage. And so my friend Michael O'Hanlon of the Brookings Institution and I co-authored an op-ed for the Washington Post, laying out the truth in defense of the amazing women who serve their country honorably — not to mention those who would like to follow in their footsteps someday. The reality is our military standards have changed — in smart, precise ways — that ensure everyone in uniform is more than capable of doing the job they're tasked with. I fully expect Hegseth to do his darnedest to roll back that progress — and I'm braced for the day when these guys refer to 18% of active-duty military personnel as "DEI hires." Those women and their families have sacrificed so much for this country. They deserve better than to be denigrated by their leaders. Thank you, Amy
