When our country is under threat, Michiganders always speak up. That's why, as State Senator, I always spoke up against redistricting practices that infringed on your right to an equal chance at having your voice heard in our elections.
It's why I'm speaking up today against the new Texas redistricting map. It's also why I refuse to be silent as representatives are threatened just because they refused to vote for this. When there were issues four years ago, I organized with former State Rep. and Detroit Caucus Chair Sherry Gay-Dagnogo.
Michiganders made it clear that elected officials shouldn't be picking their voters. It's important for us to have consistent rules across the country that do not allow this to happen. Redistricting isn't just about one political party or the other, but about racial equality, election transparency, and the future of our country. It's easy to say it's not okay today, but remember the people who have been doing this work before it was popular.
Cheating the system to win isn't how we do things here in Michigan. It definitely isn't how I do things. Join me in the fight to defend our democracy and our way of doing things here in Michigan.
