In a move that was audacious and deeply troubling at the time, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) had called for a formal impeachment inquiry targeting President Joe Biden. Although McCarthy has since been removed as Speaker, the call for impeachment came despite the glaring absence of concrete evidence linking the President to any criminal wrongdoing. The move is not just a political gambit. It sets a dangerous precedent; impeachment should not become the new normal. McCarthy and other House Republican leaders like House Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) are not letting the fact that their months of investigations have turned up no evidence of wrongdoing by the president get in the way of their long-standing plans. The aim, it seems, is to obtain bank records and documents related to the Biden family and to further distract from Trump and MAGA GOP's many indictments—a fishing expedition rather than a justified inquiry. We cannot stand idly by as the same MAGA Republicans who engaged in a criminal conspiracy to overthrow the will of the people have now hijacked control of the House. They are using their ill-gotten power to block what our families need, wreak havoc on our economy, and peddle their propaganda through sham impeachment proceedings. This is not about justice or accountability; it's a blatant abuse of power aimed at undermining President Biden and our democratic process.
