Term limits would keep the judges of the highest court of the land accountable, which we badly need after the blatant ethics violations committed by many have been exposed. With term limits, accountability, and transparency, America can rebuild a relationship of trust with its people. Sign the petition now: Implement term limits for the Supreme Court! A bipartisan coalition of judges, legal scholars, and researchers have suggested a limit of 18 years of service for Supreme Court justices. Transitioning away from the lifetime appointment system that allows justices to serve for decades would ensure that the Court better reflects the current state of American values and society. This change could also reduce the politicization and partisanship of the Court by making the appointment process more predictable and less influenced by the timing of vacancies. In more recent decades, the length of terms served by justices on the Court has significantly increased, and many have served many years beyond the historical average. The coalition of legal experts selected an 18-year term limit for their proposal, as that limit corresponds with the historically typical length of service. Our nation is ever-evolving, constantly changing, and diverse — which should be a point of pride.
