Jason,
Let's start with some straight talk: The latest New York Times poll that shows Trump ahead of Biden 48%-43% is nerve-wracking, to say the least.
It's the largest lead Trump has held in a poll like this since 2015. And no one who poses such an open threat to American democracy should be sniffing the White House.
But you know me. I'm not one to process bad news by wringing my hands and pulling out my hair. I'm going to look for the path forward and devote myself to doing the work.
So here's what I'd tell anyone who asks about these polls: Dig deeper.
The reality is the people who hold the cards in this election are the parts of Biden's 2020 coalition more likely to be switching to Trump. Over and over again, the polling shows these cohorts aren't paying close attention to the race. Independents, young people, and moderates of both parties — they all report in these surveys that they're simply not tuned in yet. (Can you blame them?)
To me, that's an obvious strategic need with a clear path to victory. First of all, these folks are going to learn more about the election in the next eight months, whether they're trying or not. But more importantly, our data shows that when these groups learn about Trump's brazenly anti-democratic behavior and campaign promises, they refuse to vote for him.
It all comes down to whether our side does three things before November:
- Can we find and reach these pro-democracy voters?
- Can we construct an effective message that conveys the urgency and the stakes in this election? And can we pair it with a messenger they trust?
- And can we do all of it aggressively enough to win?
We have a plan to do every one of those things. But we need help funding it.
That's why I send emails like this — because while we all see the scary polls in the news, I'm looking at real data that lays out exactly how we can turn the tables and win.
Will you chip in today and help make sure we can execute our plan to stop Trump and defend democracy?
It's all of us vs. MAGA. Let's not leave anything to chance.
Thank you,
Amy
