Jason,
Something alarming is going on with Donald Trump. (Yes, I know that sentence could refer to a dozen different things.)
In the past few days, Trump has dramatically flip-flopped on a handful of major issues. After years of opposing cuts to Social Security and Medicare (even attacking his primary opponents on the issue months ago!), he suddenly suggested he could support cuts this week.
And after trying to ban TikTok as president, he just came out in defense of the company, opposing legislation that would require them to sever ties to the Chinese government or risk a ban.
Jason, no one would ever accuse Donald Trump of having a strong grasp of the issues. But the timing of these reversals is suspicious at best.
It's no secret that Donald Trump has piled up hundreds of millions of dollars in legal fees and penalties. He's even siphoned millions of small-dollar campaign donations to pay for attorneys throughout the saga.
Here's where it gets weird: Observers have noticed that recent visitors to Mar-a-Lago raise major flags.
One major Republican donor who has long kept his distance from Trump just made a visit to the former president in Florida. That donor just happens to have billions personally at stake in TikTok. We don't know if any cash changed hands, but we do know that the two men suddenly see eye to eye on the social media platform.
MAGA might just be up for sale. If this were anyone else, it'd be the scandal to end all scandals. (I'm not going to hold my breath that this will be the straw to break the camel's back with his supporters.)
But think about this: The threats to democracy, the hostility to our allies, the love for dictators and the threats of violence — all of it becomes even more terrifying if Donald Trump is also selling his positions off to the highest bidder.
Trump is shaping up to be a perfect storm designed to end the American experiment. Who's with me on doing everything we can to stop him — for good?
Thank you,
Amy
