Bear with me, Jason. What I'm about to write about sounds a whole lot like some fringe conspiracy theory. But it's real.
For those who aren't familiar with Project 2025, buckle up.
Donald Trump has yelled for years about wanting to "totally obliterate the deep state." When he was president, he did plenty to break political norms. But at the end of the day, our democracy survived — barely.
If there's a next time, we might not be so lucky. The Heritage Foundation, a far-right think tank, has published a 920-page playbook for Trump's next term called "Project 2025" — a blow-by-blow guide to dismantling the government from the inside and installing an all-powerful presidency.
Here are just a handful of priorities they lay out in this MAGA manifesto:
- Deploying the military to "enforce the law" in cities across the country.
- Rounding up immigrants into internment camps.
- Codifying a national abortion ban and withdrawing FDA approval for contraception.
- Banning gay marriage.
- Undoing all climate action taken by the Biden administration and diverting all energy policy to more drilling.
- Lowering the corporate tax rate.
- Abolishing the EPA and the Department of Education.
- Firing government employees not sufficiently on board with the MAGA agenda.
That sounds a whole lot like the playbook for authoritarian government to me. Normally, I'd take stories like this with several grains of salt. Extreme conservatives have fantasized for decades about destroying the federal government. That's nothing new.
What's different this time is Trump himself is talking about this plan — floating the idea that Article II of the Constitution lets the president do "whatever" he wants. And in his rants on the campaign trail, he talks openly about some of the most extreme parts of Project 2025.
Most voters have never heard of Project 2025 — I believe we need to change that. Our data is clear that when key parts of the electorate see the threat Trump poses to our democracy, they refuse to vote for him. The Trump team is doing the hard part for us, laying out in no uncertain terms just how they'd rip apart the America we know and love.
Our job is to make sure the voters who will decide this election hear this message loud and clear — can you help fund our program to reach pro-democracy voters in battleground states?
This is scary stuff. But I'm proud to be part of a team that refuses to be paralyzed by fear or intimidation. Thank you for confronting head-on the dangers of a second Trump term. Let's make sure it never happens.
Amy
