Jason -
Since the election, I've been doing a lot of reflecting — on what went wrong, on how we can do better, and on how we weather the chaos ahead.
One thing I've heard a lot of critics say is that Democrats were too hyperbolic about calling Trump an authoritarian or warning that he wants to destroy our democracy. They argue that "crying wolf" could help Trump in the long run — that if he doesn't personally demolish the Capitol building in first 100 days, he'll get credit for a new, bipartisan tone.
Honestly, I think that kind of Monday morning quarterbacking is BS. The threats to democracy were — and are — real. It was our (and others') responsibility to make sure voters knew those stakes. We didn't win, but it doesn't mean that we were wrong to fight or that it was a strategic mistake to tell the truth.
The same goes for another idea I've heard from some folks that, because Trump won, that it's all over now. Time to give up. Kiss the Constitution goodbye. Elon Musk and Donald Trump are our new twin emperors.
Please don't fall for that hogwash!
Yes, Trump's rise to power again is as absurd as it is heartbreaking. But I haven't seen one poll that said voters want him to roll back democratic norms. I haven't seen a survey that says Americans want the military deployed in U.S. cities or the Department of Education shut down. I certainly don't think the American people like the idea of the wealthiest man in the world getting to decide who receives Social Security.
So after a lot of thinking, here's where I come down: None of the MAGA agenda is guaranteed. The fights ahead of us are winnable. But we have to muster the strength to wage them.
Look, if you're feeling burned out right now, I totally get it. Rest up. We're going to need you in the weeks and months to come. (I'm serious. A lot of folks out there need to heal before you can jump back in the ring.)
It's on the rest of us to hold the line while this movement gets back to full strength. I'll be honest — how we can best throw a wrench in Trump's plans is up in the air. There's no grand plan or silver-bullet operation at this point.
That's OK. The important part is the fight.
We've been through good times and bad times together. But through all of it, I know that the power of this team is rooted in our love for this country. We share a recognition that if people like us don't stand up when it counts, our hopes to withstand a second Trump administration diminish.
I believe in us. I believe in America, despite the results of this election. I truly do.
So when I say, "Happy New Year!" this year, I mean it. We're happy warriors for the cause of democracy.
And I couldn't be prouder to be fighting alongside you.
