| Jason, This is the longest email I'll ever send you, but if you'll give me a few minutes, I'd like to tell you a bit about who I am, why I'm running, and what drives me to do this work. I'm a lifelong Oakland County resident. I was raised here, I was educated here, and I was shaped by this community. At Groves High School and later at Michigan State, I learned that public service is about showing up when people need you most. That's why I joined student humanitarian aid missions where I helped rebuild homes after Hurricane Katrina and supported communities affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa. After college, I came home and went to work for my hometown mayor, who you might now know as Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence. She showed me that leadership is about lifting people up, not tearing them down. In 2011, I ran for City Council and became the youngest person ever elected to that office. We helped strengthen our neighborhoods after the Great Recession, brought new jobs to the city, and made government more accessible to the people it serves. From there, I took that same approach to the State Legislature. I've represented hundreds of thousands of residents in Oakland County, and I've worked to deliver results that truly matter. As President Pro Tem of the Michigan Senate, I helped lead the fight to flip the Senate blue for the first time in 40 years. We restored labor rights, passed the first gun safety laws in a generation, and protected reproductive freedom. I also sponsored more bills signed into law than any other legislator that year. And when the far-right tried to re-ban same-sex marriage in Michigan, I didn't wait for permission to respond – I showed up to their press conference and took it over. Because I've never been afraid to stand up to extremism, no matter where it shows up. Now, I'm running for Congress because I know what's at stake. Donald Trump and his allies are openly threatening our democracy. They're attacking public education, undermining health care, and trying to roll back our fundamental freedoms. Oakland County needs a representative who doesn't just talk about doing better, but actually demands results. Someone who will fight to lower costs, protect Social Security and Medicare, and stand up to the chaos and corruption that have poisoned Washington. That's the kind of leadership I've always tried to bring to public service, and it's what I'll bring to Congress, too. If you've made it this far (and thank you if you have), here's the most important thing I'll ask: Will you chip in to build the kind of campaign that can deliver bold leadership for Michigan families? |
| I promise my next emails will be shorter, but this one felt important. – Jeremy |
