The Census Bureau's research shows that COVID-era relief packages enacted in 2020 and 2021 caused a historic decline in the child poverty rate: it was only 5.2%. Since Congress failed to prevent the expiration of those programs in 2022, the child poverty rate in the U.S. has more than doubled. 12.4% of American children were living below the poverty line in 2022. President Biden and most Democrats in Congress supported an extension, but remain powerless in the face of Republican greed. When the expanded child tax credit was in effect, families used the money on basic necessities like food, housing, utilities, and emergency savings. For the first time in our country's history, child poverty dropped below 10%. Only 1 in 20 children were living in poverty, a historic low.
