Trump case of falsifying business records to cover up campaign finance violations during the 2016 presidential election. It is the first conviction of a former U.S. president in history. This is an important affirmation of the rule of law. No one individual, no matter how powerful or rich, is above the law. Not even a former President of the United States. Anything less is not democracy. Trump's felony convictions will not bar him from running for President, and we will still need to defeat him in November. And as we saw outside the courthouse immediately after the verdict, he will be even more aggressive in attacking the democratic guardrails protecting our institutions. So this is no time to let up in our efforts to ensure a Democratic majority in the House and Senate. And despite Trump's efforts to distract, delay, and deny – justice arrived for Donald Trump all the same. And by a jury of his peers. My takeaway: Our system of justice worked. Our rule of law withstood the immense pressure Trump brought to bear. Notwithstanding the enormous stresses on our democracy, the system is holding. And accountability matters. Winning the presidency may now be the only thing remaining between Trump and avoiding prison time — either in this prosecution or three others — and he has shown he will tear down the entire system of American democracy to protect himself and return to power.
