Jason, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, the first Native person to serve as a secretary in the presidential cabinet, helped to establish the Advisory Committee on Reconciliation in Place Names. The goal of the Committee is to remove racist slurs and offensive stereotypes from the names of waterways and geographical landmarks. The team has already worked to rename over 650 locations, but there's still work to be done. The Advisory Committee on Reconciliation in Place Names is meeting this month to continue their work. They'd also like to see a 90-day minimum Tribal consultation period as well as community listening sessions and education surrounding upcoming renamings.
