Jason,
Remember when we learned that Ron Johnson was working behind the scenes in Wisconsin to let his friends in the Republican-controlled state legislature decide who wins and loses federal elections?
Well, the saga just got a whole lot scarier.
Those same Republicans just finished an "investigation" into the 2020 election and put forth fringe conspiracies that have long been debunked. They're even endorsing an effort to decertify the results. (For the record, that isn't something that can be done under the law. But we're not really dealing with sticklers for the facts here...)
Let's be clear about one thing: This has nothing to do with 2020. Everyone behind these "audits" knows that it's all bunk. What Ron Johnson and his friends want to do is create the pretense to change the rules, so they can overturn future elections whenever they don't like the outcome.
Ron Johnson is our top Senate target this year and if you were looking for a reason to support the effort to end his political career, this is a good one — chip in right now and let's take power away from the people who threaten our democracy.
Right now, elections in Wisconsin are overseen by a bipartisan commission that has a pretty well established history of running fair elections in a state that has been a true battleground for decades.
What Republicans like Ron Johnson want to do is take that power away from the fair-minded commission and put it in the hands of the hyperpartisan state legislature. Their explanation is based almost entirely on not liking the fact that Wisconsin took measures to help people vote in the middle of a pandemic.
In truth, what they didn't like is that Joe Biden won their state fair and square, so now they're blaming the refs. Now, they want to go as far as getting rid of the refs altogether and just let one team call the shots.
It's bananas. But if they can pull this off in the battleground state of Wisconsin, all bets are off when it comes to the future of free and fair elections.
Our work is about fighting back against those who want to undermine our democracy — will you chip in to help fund our organizing efforts in Wisconsin to defeat Ron Johnson and his friends in the Sedition Caucus?
At a moment like this, it's never been clearer what's on the line in this fight. I'm so proud to be fighting alongside you.
Thanks,
Amy
