Our health and environment are at risk – ban fracking immediately! For years the oil and gas industry has widely promoted the lie that fracking is "safe," yet the evidence proves the opposite. Fracking leads to increased water waste and depleted groundwater, earthquakes, direct impacts to our health, and contributes to our ever-warming planet just like other dirty fossil fuels. Water usage and pollution: Fracking consumes a massive amount of water. Anywhere between 1.5 million and 9.7 million gallons of water may be used to frack a single well. Fracking for oil and gas is devouring American groundwater, and the potential contamination of drinking water sources by fracking chemicals poses risks to nearby communities, and fracking chemicals can contaminate drinking water sources, posing major risks to nearby communities. Earthquakes: Scientific research has shown the connection between fracking and increased earthquakes, despite the fossil fuel industry trying to deny it. Most of these earthquakes are caused by underground injection wells, which are used to dispose of contaminated water produced during the fracking process. Increased climate pollution: Methane gas—the main component of natural gas—is a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. In fact, it's 85 to 105 times more powerful than carbon dioxide at disrupting the climate over a 20-year period. Health impacts: Fracking is making people sick, including nosebleeds, headaches, and skin lesions. Children living near fracking wells are two to three times more likely to contract a form of childhood leukemia. Black and low-income communities are more likely to live near fracking wells and are disproportionately exposed to health risks. Fracking is more expensive, more polluting, and more dangerous than clean, renewable energy. Fracking is a key contributor to our climate emergency, and it is destroying our communities, our health, and our environment. Previously, Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced the Fracking Ban Act that would ban fracking nationwide by 2025 and immediately prevent federal permits from being issued for new fracking, new pipelines, new natural gas or oil export terminals, expanded fracking, and other oil and gas infrastructure.
