Jason,
The House finally elected a speaker today. But you might want to hold off on the confetti cannons…
It turns out the person who united the entire Republican Party after weeks of infighting is a relatively unknown far-right Louisiana congressman named Mike Johnson, who the New York Times described as "the most important architect of the Electoral College objections." Yep — he's the main guy who helped Republicans vote to reject the 2020 election results.
Here's how Rep. Matt Gaetz described this turn of events:
"If you don't think that moving from Kevin McCarthy to
MAGA Mike Johnson shows the ascendance
of this movement and where the power
in the Republican Party truly lies,
then you're not paying attention."
Mike Johnson made his name denying that our current president was elected fair and square. And now he's two heartbeats away from the job himself.
Let's be clear: This is an existential fight to save our democracy. Will you step up to build our campaign to fight back and defeat Trump and his blind loyalists next fall?
When we started Operation Saving Democracy, I'll admit I didn't have "House Speaker Mike Johnson" on my bingo card. But this is the fight we knew was coming — it's the one we refuse to back down from.
Thank you,
Amy
