Jason, I still can't fully wrap my head around it.
The man who instigated a violent insurrection in a blatant attempt to overturn the results of an election he lost will, in two weeks, return to the White House. It's a horrifying, unfathomable reality for those of us who cherish democracy and the Constitution of the United States.
Sadly, the days ahead are likely to get worse. The next president intends to abuse his power by pardoning those who, four years ago today, assaulted police officers and plotted the assassination of his former running mate. We're bound to see his corruption and his authoritarian ambitions reach new, previously unseen levels.
But we can be honest with ourselves without being defeatist. These guys want you to believe they're all-powerful geniuses. They are not. They want to intimidate us and crow about the size of their mandate — they didn't even manage to win 50% of the vote. The current state of play is ugly, but that doesn't mean it's destined to last. As someone who taught political science at the U.S. Naval Academy, I can tell you:
The pendulum will swing back. And how fast and how far it swings depends on us.
Today, on this shameful anniversary, I'm committed to doing what I can to ensure that history doesn't forget what really happened four years ago, no matter what this next administration does to try to rewrite that story.
I'm committed to ensuring that those who had a hand in making it happen — those who empowered violent mobs and enabled their leader's return to power — can't escape a permanent stain on their names.
More than anything, I'm committed to the long haul, because the cause of the United States of America is a worthy one.
We are witnessing an attempt to distort what we stand for as a nation into something that serves one man and his ultra-wealthy friends. We must refuse to let them get away with it. I believe, deep down, that most of our leaders love our country more than they love power. We're counting on them. We're relying on brave journalists exposing corruption — and regular folks spreading the word, telling the truth and calling out lies.
Fighting back starts with not giving in. I'm proud to be on this side with you, especially today.
More soon,
Amy
