The fundamental backbone of our democracy is being severely tested right now.
On Tuesday, Wisconsin will head to the polls to fill a state supreme court seat — the first major special election of the second Trump term. Who wins will decide a majority on the court and determine the future of reproductive choice and voting rights, as well how electoral maps get drawn in a key battleground.
Long story short, this is a big one. And everyone knows it — especially the richest man in the world. Elon Musk has dumped nearly $20 million into the race so far, instantly making this the most expensive state judicial race in American history. And he's not just spending big on TV, he's raffling off $1 million a day and handing out $100 cash to voters who sign his petition in a scheme that seems obviously, wildly illegal.
If Musk succeeds, you better believe this is the playbook he'll run in every major election to come. Because while $20 million is enough to drown voters in deceitful ads, it's barely a drop in the bucket of Musk's wealth. For Musk, $20 million is the equivalent of about five bucks for the average Wisconsin household. Imagine if you could exert your political will on an entire state for the price of a fancy cup of coffee.
Look, this guy thinks he's a genius — way smarter than the voters of Wisconsin who he thinks he can bribe. Way smarter than law enforcement or the courts. It's why he ignores or openly violates the law without any fear of consequences.
Here's the thing. He's not a genius, he's just super-rich. And voters will see through his money and his phony, last-minute attention to their state.
The grassroots in Wisconsin is strong and well organized, but they need every bit of help they can get to go toe to toe with the richest man in the world and win.
