This week, many Americans are hearing the term ghost gun for the first time. So what are they, and what threat do they pose to public safety?

Ghost guns are firearms that can be assembled at home using parts or kits or through 3D printing. These weapons have long been intentionally marketed as untraceable to appeal to those who want to AVOID background checks or cannot legally own a firearm — like minors, gun traffickers, and domestic abusers. They were originally designed to circumvent gun laws and didn't require a serial number, making it harder for law enforcement to solve crimes. In the last decade, ghost guns have proliferated across the country at astounding rates. The top five YouTube instructional videos on ghost guns have been viewed more than 3 million times and the use of ghost guns in U.S. crimes has risen more than 1,000% since 2017. President Biden clearly understands the risk to public safety that ghost guns pose. That's why he instituted a regulation mandating ghost guns be regulated like all other firearms. That rule went into effect in 2022, and since then, we've seen major declines in ghost guns recovered at crime scenes. But the fate of this common-sense regulation hangs in the balance. Donald Trump has made clear that he wants to roll back every gun safety measure implemented by the Biden administration, including the federal ghost gun rule. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will soon issue a decision in Garland v. VanDerStok on whether the ATF will be allowed to enforce Biden's regulation of ghost guns. This is deeply troubling, friend. While the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has made national headlines, ghost guns have been used in crimes all across the country to wage violence against our communities. All firearms, no matter how they are constructed, should be subject to background checks and regulations. That's why we are calling on Congress to pass The Untraceable Firearms Act, which would ban ghost guns and other untraceable firearms. | Remembering the Lives Lost in Sandy Hook |
Today marks 12 years since the devastating shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. In just seconds, 26 children and teachers were brutally murdered and an entire community was changed forever. This year, survivors of the Sandy Hook shooting graduated from high school and are becoming adults, something that twenty of their classmates never got to experience. It's a heartbreaking reminder of how the gun violence epidemic has devastated communities across the country and impacted entire generations. This horrific event should have resulted in major federal reforms 12 years ago, but instead, even more children have experienced school shootings and lockdown drills. But momentum is on our side and we refuse to give up. We have made life-saving progress in recent years, and we're not slowing down. Since Sandy Hook, we have passed over 600 gun safety laws in states across the country. We passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first major federal gun violence prevention law in 30 years. We've upheld life-saving bans on assault weapons, like the one used in the shooting, in court. And we even saw Alex Jones, the dangerous Sandy Hook conspiracy theorist, finally held accountable. Brady Presents Culture Change Work at Nation's Leading Firearm Injury and Prevention Conference | This week, Brady was honored to attend and present at the 2024 National Research Conference for the Prevention of Firearm-Related Harms in Seattle, WA. Now in its third year, the conference boasts over 500 presentations, with experts from over two dozen specialties in the gun violence prevention field. Brady Partnerships Manager JJ Janflone shared the life-saving impact and progress of our Show Gun Safety campaign which empowers Hollywood to model safe, responsible firearm use on screen. Studies show that audiences adopt the behaviors and attitudes of their favorite on-screen characters. With researchers and medical professionals in the room, JJ drew parallels to other successful public health movements and how film and television have been used to tackle issues like smoking and drunk driving. We know we can do the same for gun violence by changing the norms and culture surrounding firearms in America. |
