When my parents brought our family to the United States, they came legally — full of hope, humility, and determination to build a better life, through transparent and quick processes.We didn't have much, but we had faith in the American promise: that if you work hard, play by the rules, and give back, this country will welcome you as one of its own.
That's why I believe so deeply in building fair, legal, and humane immigration pathways. People deserve the chance to contribute, to build a life, and to feel safe in the communities they call home. We need reform to help those who want nothing more than safety, opportunity, and to be Americans, just like my parents dreamt.
But ICE raids that terrorize neighborhoods and separate families don't make us safer — they make us less human. We can secure our borders and still follow the law, while treating people with dignity and compassion. If extremists in this race win, Illinois 8 will become a playground for Kristi Noem to menace our workers, neighbors, and friends.
America is strongest when we live up to our ideals — not when we turn our backs on them.
