At almost every campaign stop I do across the Central Valley, I ask people the same question: do you or someone you know drive to Tijuana to get medicine or fix your teeth?
Almost every single time, hands go up.
I'll never get used to that. In the wealthiest country in the world, so many of my neighbors are forced to seek health care from the country my own parents left behind.
I first started asking that question at a forum in Stratford, an unincorporated community about 40 miles south of Fresno where the poverty rate exceeds 30%. But even though the border is more than six hours away, they're forced to make the drive anyway because it's still cheaper, and faster, than getting care here.
That's a policy failure — plain and simple. And it's exactly why Medicare for All is a driving force of this campaign.
Health care is a human right, not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it. That's not a radical idea, it's just the truth. And it's exactly what my opponent David Valadao has voted against, again and again, while taking over $1.2 million from the health care industry.
This campaign is about doing what's right by the working families who are the backbone of our country, but we can't do it without the resources to get this message in front of every family in this district who's had to make an impossible choice about their health care.
