Honor women veterans. (Elect them.)

Happy Veterans Day, Jason --   As we salute the Americans who have served our country today, I'm reminded of why I started Honor Bound: To inspire more women veterans to "pick up their pack" again and run for elected office.    There are two big reasons this is my latest mission in politics. First, only nine female veterans (out of over 2 million) have ever served in Congress — not to mention the fact that women in general are still woefully underrepresented in the halls of power. The other goal of Honor Bound is to elect leaders who know what it means to serve our country, who will stand up for our constitution, inclusion, and democratic values. We're planning to make our first endorsements in January, and I can't wait to fight like hell for them.    Today, in honor of Veterans Day, will you support this worthy cause of electing more women veterans?   "Country over party" is more than a slogan for me. It's the foundation for the values instilled in me since I was a kid. It's guided my career, and right now, it's sadly missing in our politics. It might not surprise you to learn that veterans are serving in Congress right now at the lowest levels since World War II. Perhaps that's why we see so many people in power who act like the other party — or even the media — is the actual enemy.    The ugly truth is that there are a lot of factors keeping women on the sidelines right now. Chief among them is that too many people who would make amazing public officials simply can't stomach the idea of getting into politics. I know something about overcoming those hurdles, and I can't wait to share what I've learned.    Together, Honor Bound will inspire and encourage a group of incredible Americans (not just women vets but any woman who has served in places like the CIA, FBI or AmeriCorps) to take their service to the next level and run for office.    Here's something else I know: Encouragement from a friend or loved one goes a long way. For many women elected officials I've talked to, it all started when someone suggested that she think about running. I'm challenging you to think about a woman you know who has led a life of service. Take a minute today and send her a note encouraging her to consider running for office. It doesn't matter where she feels called to serve — it could be city council, or school board, or Congress. What matters is she hears you say you think she'd be good at it. Trust me, it matters. Then groups like Honor Bound will do everything we can to help them over the finish line. The cause of inspiring more badass women leaders to run for office is near and dear to my heart, and I'd love your help today.
