Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act we fought hard to pass, we secured a significant $80 billion investment in the IRS last year. This funding has already made a crucial impact in ensuring wealthy tax cheats pay their fair share and providing improved service to working families:
✅ Dramatically reduced IRS phone wait times.
✅ Launched new taxpayer services launched, including the Direct File pilot.
✅ Enforced sweeping tax enforcement that has allowed the agency to recover $500 million from wealthy and corporate tax evaders.
Make no mistake: the GOP's relentless desire for further IRS cuts in upcoming government funding bills has nothing to do with fiscal responsibility as they claim. Their push for defunding the IRS over the past decades has hamstrung the agency’s ability to go after wealthy tax cheats and increased the deficit. Their sole goal is to shield the ultra-wealthy at the expense of our democracy and essential programs like Social Security and Medicare.
We can’t let them have their way. If these cuts proceed, it will mean a loss of at least $114 billion in federal revenue over the next decade, undermining our fight for economic justice.
