Jason, do you think that abortion should be legal in the United States? Read the full text of Daily Kos' petition below. Fifty-one years ago, on January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court issued its landmark decision in Roe v. Wade, protecting the constitutional right to reproductive health choices. Americans had the constitutional right to abortion for nearly 50 years. Then, almost two years ago, a very different Supreme Court overturned Roe. Now, abortion is nearly completely banned in 14 states and 7 more states have enacted harsh restrictions. The good news: We can fight back and win–we've been witnessing this across the country since the Court ripped away our constitutional right. In 2022, voters in Kansas, Kentucky and Montana all defeated anti-abortion bans to their state constitutions. California, Vermont and Michigan all passed ballot measures that enshrine abortion rights in their state constitutions, forever protecting that freedom from politicians. In 2023, Ohio voters passed a measure for a constitutional amendment to protect abortion. The Democratic governor in Kentucky kept his seat in the deep red state after an election often defined by his support for abortion rights. And Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin failed to gain control of the state legislature with which he planned to pass his 15-week ban on abortions. Abortion rights and our reproductive freedoms are undefeated! This year, an election year, we could see abortion on the ballot in at least 11 more states. Why? Because abortion is a winning issue and the vast majority of the country votes in favor of abortion as a Constitutional right, and a human right. The writing on the wall: Democratic candidates must expand abortion access, champion platforms that support bodily autonomy, and vigorously advocate for abortion rights! And in every state where it's possible to further enshrine our rights, we need to take action to make it possible. The people are on our side, and it's time we get it done.
