Jason,
The Voter Protection Project and I agree that we need to abolish ICE. The violence and mayhem they are committing around the country show that ICE is beyond repair. But here's the thing: abolishing ICE is not enough. Democrats need an actual plan for what's next to fix our broken immigration system.
Donald Trump has turned ICE into his own personal enforcers of our broken and racist immigration system. The entire machine needs to be dismantled and rebuilt, with consequences for those who have violated Americans' rights while hiding behind a mask.
Here's what we need to do: 1. Abolish ICE 2. Prosecute the ICE and CBP officers who murdered American citizens and violated constitutional rights 3. Build a comprehensive and humane immigration system that incentivizes people to come here legally instead of illegally, provides a clear pathway to citizenship, and is supported by an enforcement system that reflects American values in every action and policy.
Throughout four tours in Iraq, team, I saw first-hand the chaos that comes from bringing down violent enforcers without a plan for what comes next. We need to heed those lessons right now, and not only abolish ICE, but have an immediate plan of action to fix our broken immigration system.
