Jason,
For those keeping track of how many days it's been since Donald Trump did something to disqualify himself from being president, you can reset your counter to ZERO.
Let's just remind ourselves of the things that have happened this week:
- Trump made not-so-veiled threats that if these court cases don't go in his favor, it would lead to "bedlam in this country" and refused to discourage his supporters from getting violent. (I'm sure it's purely a coincidence that a judge overseeing one of Trump's cases had a bomb threat at his house yesterday.)
- His lawyers, in making the case that a president has total immunity from criminal prosecution, actually told the court Trump would even be able to have his political rivals assassinated.
- Finally, Trump sent an absolutely unhinged email to his supporters with all-caps highlighted text like "I AM YOUR RETRIBUTION!" and "I WILL NEVER SURRENDER!"
Normally, you'd look at that and think this is a comic book villain just before the good guy defeats him. Instead, this is the man who in a matter of days will likely lock up the Republican nomination — and who, according to some polls, is actually favored to win the presidency this fall.
But there's something big those polls can't capture.
This disturbing, dangerous behavior from Trump turns off a critical segment of the electorate. I call them pro-democracy voters — folks who, in normal times, might put national security or veterans' issues at the top of their agenda but who are very worried about the future of our democracy. These are people Republicans can't win without — especially not in battleground states, like Arizona, Georgia, and Wisconsin.
Right now, no one's reaching these voters with a steady diet of messaging from trusted sources on the stakes in this election. That's exactly what we plan to do, and we need your help to fund it. Will you chip in today and help make sure that Trump pays the price for his actions, if nowhere else, at the ballot box?
Thank you,
Amy
