Public schools should be places where children are free to grow and learn without fear. But right now, ICE operations are taking place inside public schools, traumatizing children, terrifying families, and forcing districts to cancel classes to keep their students safe.
In Minnesota, the day Renee Nicole Good was killed, ICE officers stormed a public high school and caused widespread panic. Chemical irritants were used on students.
Throughout the next few days, families kept their children home. Minneapolis schools cancelled classes. Teachers were scrambling to protect their students when they should have been able to teach in peace.
Across the country, teachers have been detained on school grounds. Immigrant families are pulling their children out of school because they no longer trust that school buildings are safe. Students aren't learning, attendance rates are plummeting, and whole communities are living in fear.
No child or parent should ever have to choose between learning and safety.
State Attorneys General have the power and responsibility to act.
That's why we're calling on our Attorneys General to ban immigration enforcement officers from public school property and take legal action when federal agents endanger students or intimidate districts.
